About

Portrait of Daniel Tucker

Hi, I'm Daniel Tucker. I'm a software engineer living in Colorado, currently a Senior Staff Software Engineer at Bill.com. My focus, and honestly my favorite part of the job, is developer experience — building the platforms, tooling, and automation that let engineers spin up services, ship code, and debug production-like issues without fighting their environment to do it. I care a lot about the seconds and minutes that add up to a developer's day: how fast a local setup comes up, how clear an error message is, how quickly someone can get from "something's broken" to "here's why." More recently that's meant building AI-assisted workflows so agents can safely introspect, diagnose, and repair development environments themselves — shifting repetitive troubleshooting off of humans entirely.

I didn't come up through a traditional CS track. I spent a decade in the Oklahoma Air National Guard as an Aircraft Generation Specialist, earning a degree in Information Technology Assurance & Forensics at Oklahoma State University while still serving. That path gave me an appreciation for process, discipline, and troubleshooting under pressure that's stuck with me through every engineering job since. Looking back, the developer-experience thread runs further back than my current title suggests — I've been the person building internal tooling, streamlining deploy pipelines, and smoothing over rough edges in the stack at every stop, from petroleum industry line-of-business apps to social plug-ins for SharePoint to member-facing platforms at Exclusive Resorts, long before "DX" was the name for it.

Outside of work, I've been on Linux as my daily driver for over twenty years—I like the control, and if something can be tweaked, I'll probably try. I build small things for fun: APIs in Rust, progressive web apps, mobile apps, whatever project shows up in my head that week.

Lately jiu-jitsu has been my main outlet. It scratches the same itch as development—technical, iterative, and the feedback is immediate: every roll is a problem to work out in real time, and you find out fast whether your approach holds up. It's taught me as much about patience and staying focused under pressure as any codebase has.

Senior Staff Software EngineerMarch 2025 – Present

Senior Staff Software Engineer in BILL's Product, Network & AI organization, focused on developer experience and backend architecture. I design and build internal developer platforms—standardized local and cloud environments, opinionated tooling, and automation—that make it fast and reliable for engineers to spin up services, ship code, and debug production-like issues. Recently I've been integrating AI-assisted workflows into this stack so that agents can safely introspect, diagnose, and repair development environments, shifting repetitive troubleshooting from humans to automation and shortening feedback loops. Beyond hands-on engineering, I act as an architecture partner and mentor across teams, helping set standards for database migrations, CI/CD, and cloud infrastructure so our platform scales with the business.

Staff Software EngineerJanuary 2022 – March 2025

Staff Software Engineer in BILL's Product, Network & AI organization, focused on backend architecture and developer experience. I implemented and evolved core Elixir services and shared libraries, strengthened patterns for database migrations and CI/CD, and helped teams adopt safer, more standardized ways to ship changes. I built and maintained internal tooling and local development workflows that reduced environment setup friction and production risk, and I regularly partnered with product squads as a reviewer and mentor on performance, data integrity, and cloud infrastructure decisions.
